In June of 2010 I joined UK breakout indie band The Heavy to work on their highly anticipated third album.
This marked the first time I worked with the band in the studio. We spent a week recording an amazing choir at The Loft in Columbus, GA. I also worked with the band coordinating orchestra and horn sessions with Dap-King's, Bosco Mann.
It's going to be a very special record. Due out on Ninja Tune / Counter Records spring of 2012.
Oakland, CA based punk label Modern Action Records needed an easy to maintain but highly functional website that they could manage in house. So we put together a clean easy to operate website that featured an online store, blog, HTML5 music player, RSS Feed
...all managed with WordPress and an iPhone app.
My Role:
- Original Website Design & Layout
- Coding & Programming (HTML / CSS / PHP / JS / SQL)
- WordPress CMS Integration
- Social Media Integration (FB / Twitter / Linkedin)
In December of 2010 I traveled with The Heavy to the Middle East for sold-out headlining concerts in Dubai and Bahrain.
I acted as the bands Tour Manager and FOH Engineer and also arranged a promo piece with Rolling Stone ME which evolved into a 5-page feature on the boys from Noid.
Less than 4 weeks later our hotel in Bahrain was the center of a civil uprising that's still going on today.
June & July of 2010 I hit the road to manage The Heavy in support of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. With special guest billing on both coasts The Heavy treated SJDK fans to their own kind of chaos fueled funk.
The tour was a huge success and ended with a sold out show at LA's historic Wiltern Theatre.
The tour also featured 30+ US & Canada headlining dates for The Heavy including key slots at Sasquatch, 80/35, Summerfest, Taste of Chicago, The Hammer Museum (KCRW) and ESPN's Espy's party.
May of 2010 I traveled to England with The Postelles to manage and mix their UK tour with The Futureheads. The tour also included performances at Camden Crawl, The Great Escape and an NME night at Scala.
The band was touring to promote their EP White Night which was released on Capital Records / Astrelwerks.
2010's Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle was the first time in the festival's 10 year history that stretched to a third day.
The lineup featured headliners Blue Scholars, The Dead Weather and MGMT. Officially cerfitying this dirty little festival as a key festival within the independant music world.
This was the second year I'd done the Block Party site and the most recent in a string of projects managed by Fuzed Music.
January 18th, 2010 The Heavy were the musical guest on The Late Show w/ David Letterman. I joined the band as production manager and engineer. We were also joined by The Dap-Kings horn section to perform the hit song 'How You Like Me Now?'
Following the performance, for the first (and only) time in Late Show history Letterman asked the band to play the song again. CBS aired both performances and you can see them both on YouTube.
The morning after this performance saw the single hit #3 on US iTunes rock charts.
While in New York for our Letterman appearance The Heavy supported Gaz and Danny (Supergrass) + Nigel Godrich hybrid cover band Hot Rats. With 2 sold out shows at Music Hall of Williamsburgn and Bowery Ballroom fans were treated to the only 2 US shows performed by Hot Rats.
The Heavy also performed our first sold-out show in New York at 92Y Tribeca (300 cap). 18 months later we were headlining Celebrate Brooklyn for an audience of more than 5,000 fans.
While Common Market looked for a label to release their award winning Tobacco Road LP the group got restless and rushed back into the studio to record their lead up EP 'Black Patch War'.
I joined the guys with their live engineer Aaron Fisher at Jupiter Studios in Seattle to record the 5-song EP. It was released in Spring of 2008, 3 months prior to it's counterpart Tobacco Road which went on to win The Independant Music Award for Hip Hop album of the year.
Released October 2009, on Ninja Tune / Counter / +1, The House That Dirt Built was a hugely successful independant release. With over 60,000 albums sold and nearly 400,000 singles sold. Music from the album was licensed by The Fighter, Horrible Bosses, Enterouge, True Blood, ESPN, MLB, Kia (Super Bowl commercial) and more than 90 other syncs.
I spent more than 2 years touring with the band in support of this record as their Tour Manager and FOH Engineer. I also manged production for all of the bands US promo appearances.
Although it was only a short run of 3 shows both Morning Benders & Grizzley Bear have gone on to big success.
I managed these shows for the Morning Benders and mixed FOH for their shows in Seattle, Portland and Vancouver. Shortly after seeing the Portland show Rough Trade signed the Morning Benders and release the Chris Taylor produced sophomore release 'Big Echo'.
I joined The Heavy managing their US tour in the Fall of 2008. The tour to support their third US single 'Set Me Free' covered both coasts of the US and was the 2nd US tour to support Great Vengeance.
With headlining shows in LA, Chicago, Philly and NY it was a chaotic run capped off with 2 video shoots in New York City.

The Heavy marked their first US tour with a coast to coast run playing Playboy Rock The Rabbit Events.
The band also made their US Network TV debut on The Carson Daily Show the same day they recorded a song with The Crystal Method for their newest release.
I managed the tour, production and promo appearances while The Heavy made their LA, SF, Chicago and NY debuts.
In 2007 I joined Common Market and the rest of Massline along with Aaron Fisher to record their highly anticipated sophomore release 'Tobacco Road'.
The album was recorded at Seattle's famed London Bridge Studios. We recorded 19 songs all of which appear on the album.
'Tobacco Road' went on to win the 2008 Independant Music Award for Hip Hop Album of the Year.
The Heavy made their US concert debut by blowing up SXSW in 2008. With 13 performances and appearances the festival was capped off with a coveted slot at Playboy's Rock The Rabbit Party.
The band was joined by Justice, MGMT and Moby for an unbelievable night of music. Following this performance both MGMT and The Heavy found themselves on everyone's hotlist (including Spin and Rolling Stone).
This was my first chance to work with The Heavy and I've managed all of their North American production ever since.
